75% of kids with learning delays had this Reflex!
In 1976 Miriam Bender conducted a study that found a retained Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) to be present in 75% of a group of learning disabled children. They found this STNR to be a significant factor in children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).
The STNR is a developmental reflex called a primitive reflex. Primitive reflexes are reflexes that we are born with to help our brains and bodies develop in the first months of life. They help us develop things like hand eye coordination, rolling, crawling, sitting up, walking, and much more.
These reflexes should help the brain develop and then the brain should be able to shut these reflexes down to allow for more complex movements to develop. The problem is in almost every kid with learning delays I have seen this reflex does not go away, and a few other ones as well!
This results in a reflex being in the way of proper development of their eyes, balance systems, and muscular systems. All three of these systems need to be developed and are foundational for learning! I will attach a couple videos below so you can learn how to check this reflex on your own child, and learn more about what they do!
Has anyone had a child with this issue?
